Here's the Safeway at Albert Street and 25th Avenue. It has a similar vintage neon sign to the Cathedral store, but the building design is slightly newer, and the signage over the entrance was updated in the 1990s.

Anyway it was linked at Groceteria.com and as a response, I'm going to post shots of the other two free-standing Safeway stores in town in the next couple of days. (They're less interesting because they have the more modern facade, but at least the signs are neat.)

Confluence of celebrities

The Picasa/Blogger thing still isn't sorted out yet, so the resumption of photoblogging is still pending. But I just wanted to make an observation about what is going on in Regina as we speak.
Everyone knows, of course, that the Rolling Stones will be here for two performances over the weekend. (In fact, it's the only stop on their North American tour where they're playing two shows.). But stay with me... there's more.
Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron is in town, preparing for a movie shoot later in the fall. One of the places she's been spotted was the Black Eyed Peas concert the other night. A movie shooting right now in Regina co-stars noted British actor Bob Hoskins. In a couple of weeks Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone is at the University of Regina for a lecture.
And this morning in New York, outside the studios where The Daily Show tapes, Terry Gilliam was to stage a publicity stunt for his movie Tideland, which was filmed in, you guessed it, Regina.
Wrap your heads around this for a moment. This isn't like a bunch of country superstars at Craven for the jamboree. This is a massive confluence of the entertainment elite, in of all places, Regina, Saskatchewan.

This was the original Eaton's Department Store in Regina. In 1967 a mall was added onto it and it became the Eaton Dominion Mall. Following Eaton's move to the Cornwall Centre, Sears took over the space for "catalogue clearance". (The mall was renamed "Centennial Mall", and after the Dominion store became Value Village, the "Value Mall".)

This rather weatherbeaten cairn was installed in 1982 (the centennial of the Regina townsite) and marks the spot where the Canadian Pacific Railway crosses Wascana Creek -- the spot where Regina was born. To get to this marker, you have to hoof it along the Devonian Pathway -- it's in a narrow green space called Empress Park, sandwiched between homes and the Royal Regina Golf Club.

You (if there are any yous out there) may have noticed I've added a link in each post to a Yahoo! map showing the location. I'm using the beta of the new Yahoo! Maps because it's easier to link to a specific location than Google maps, and I'm not about to get into learning how the APIs work, or anything like that. This is a 20-story residential high-rise, located in Hillsdale, on the edge of Wascana Park. It caused quite a controversy when it was built, not only from its neighbours (who circulated a petition to have it imploded), but from Wascana lovers who didn't like what it did to the view. Anyway, it's still there, but it's the only building of its kind in residential Regina.
